Primitive Postures of Restoration

Primitive Postures of Restoration

“There are four positions of Zen: Lying Zen, Sitting Zen, Standing Zen, and Walking Zen.” Alan Watts   The terms biomimetics and biomimicry come from Ancient Greek: βίος (bios), life, and μίμησις (mīmēsis), imitation, from μιμεῖσθαι (mīmeisthai), to imitate, from μῖμος (mimos), actor. Influenced by Biomimetics or biomimicry is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. UpRight Movement often refers to nature’s archetype of success for guidance with its rationale in helping you to feel, move, and perform better. Understanding human development from a distant and not so distant past perspective can help us to understand movement in a broader context. The bookends of movement as well as our days is rest; the two are interwoven like a pendulum. Primitive Postures are naturally intended to be restorative. Primitive Postures are the original positions, which movement emerged from and returned back to for rest. The degree to which we are challenged within these Primitive Postures is the degree our restoration and movements are as well. Sitting on the floor in many postures is our birthright: Rising from these Primitive Postures to our full upright bipedal posture uses deeply embedded patterns, postures, and movement. Primitive Postures provide a quick but profound insight into the ease or dis-ease of your biomechanical state. You can learn WHAT these postures are and HOW to assess them. They are profoundly important. If these postures aren’t relaxing and restorative, and if living and moving with ease is valuable to you, then perhaps there is an area ready for some improvement. Standing up from the floor...
LEGACY

LEGACY

“Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei.”(Aim for the highest cloud so that if you miss it, you will hit a lofty mountain.) Maori Proverb   The All Blacks are the world’s most successful sporting outfit, undefeated in over 75% of their international matches over the last 100 years. What is the secret of their success? And what can we – as individuals, companies and teams – learn from them? A values-based, purpose driven culture is a foundation of the All Blacks’ approach and sustained success… In fact, in answer to the question, “What is the All Blacks’ competitive advantage?” key is the ability to manage their culture and central narrative by attaching the players’ personal meanings to a higher purpose. It is the identity of the of the team that matters – not so much what the All Blacks do, but who they are, what they stand for, and why they exist.” Revealing the winning secrets of the All Blacks, LEGACY tackles a number of fundamental issues facing leaders in all fields: How do you create a high performance culture? How do you maintain world-class standards, day after day, week after week, year after year? How do you handle pressure? What is the secret of sustained success? How do you deal with the pressure? And what do you leave behind you after you’re gone? What’s your legacy? The 15 Lessons in LEGACY are: Sweep the Sheds: Never be too big to do the small things that need to be done Go for the Gap: When you’re on top of your game, change your...
Happiness Is …

Happiness Is …

“If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations. If there is to be peace in the nations, there must be peace in the cities. If there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbors. If there is to be peace between neighbors, there must be peace in the home. If there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart.” Lao-Tzu   Happiness is a practice of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from peace to intense joy.  UpRight Movement helps to support the positive practice of  Your “HAPPINESS”, with its newest Happiness handout. Master Your Words, Master Your Thoughts: Mindfulness

Master Your Words, Master Your Thoughts: Mindfulness

“Master your words. Master your thoughts. Never allow your body to do harm. Follow these three roads with purity and you will find yourself upon the one way, the way of wisdom.” Buddha   Mindfulness, which evolved from Buddhist tradition, means awareness, attention, and remembering. It’s about both being reflective (understanding behaviors in terms of thoughts, feelings, and desires) and fully experiencing the fluctuation of mental states with acceptance and without judgement. While this was once a daily practice common in the world, it’s given way to busy schedules, long workdays, and social obligations. The good news: Being present is natural to humans. We’ve simply gotten away from practicing it. By practicing the qualities of mindfulness, you can enjoy the benefits, including improved stress management skills, increased focus, decreased emotional exhaustion, and optimized health (lower blood pressure, reduced chronic pain, etc.). We Can Only Be As Healthy As Our Environment

“Our [ministry] is the ministry of healing the land. If we devote ourselves to sacredness in our vocations, the world will rise to meet us. A Reason For BEing

A Reason For BEing

“When you bow deeply to the universe, it bows back.“ Morihei Ueshiba, Founder of Aikido   Okinawa is one of the five Blue Zones currently in the world where people commonly live beyond 100 years of age, and some of the things that you will notice in these populations: They are closely connected to their families. They don’t diet. They don’t exercise. Their food choices are cultural and their activity levels sustain their health and fitness. They are active. They are engaged. They don’t follow fitness routines (as we think of them). Okinawa has long been famous for its longevity. In fact, the Pacific island was originally referred to as the land of immortals, and even after repeated Chinese and Japanese invasions it still claims some of the world’s longest-lived people. Residents have less cancer, heart disease and dementia than Americans, while Okinawan women live longer than anywhere else on the planet. In America we tend to break our adult life into two phases: work and retirement. But in Okinawa there is one word that encompasses everything, ikigai (eek-y-guy). It means the reason for which you wake up in the morning, sense of purpose or, “WHY”. Experts tell us that people with a strong sense of purpose have boosted immune systems, have lower stress hormones, and they are able to grapple with the difficulties of life better than those who don’t. In Okinawa, ikigai is a very personal experience, and it manifests itself in many ways. It often is centered upon health, relationships and experiences. In the traditional Okinawan language the word retirement doesn’t even exist. What these people can teach...
